Once every month, we organize different events for our wards across our sponsored orphanage homes and schools ranging from self-development to career talks e.t.c. For these events, we usually invite seasoned experts in specific fields to enlighten our wards.
On Thursday 9th September 2021, we invited a passionate author who had spent well over 20 years in Child, Teens and Parent coaching- Mr. Kingsley Obum-Ogbulem (Child, Teens Counselor & Parenting Coach) and author of “When Fishes Climb Trees”. The venue for the event was Compassionate Orphanage Home, Igando, Lagos State.
The theme of the event was “Working from your comfort zone tagged “Finding Your Strength & Making the best of it” and it was in commemoration of the 2021 World Literacy Day celebration.
Present at the event was one of our Partners who delightfully shared her experience with us and stated “I was happy to visit Compassionate Orphanage. I was in high spirits and didn’t even know why, later I found out why. I definitely didn’t waste my time paying rapt attention knowing that I want to raise children with the right values and mindset.”
Mr. Kingsley Obum-Ogbulem was such a great delight to listen to and learn from. He met with the children and talked with them. The way he interacted with them, you will immediately know it didn’t start today.
He advised the children to never put aside whatever they were passionate about for things they liked less. According to him, lots of people have become miserable because they either didn’t follow their passion but rather threaded other people’s paths. o them to read and be well guided in life.
His book “When Fishes Climb Trees” tells us of how many have lost it because they didn’t involve themselves in what they love. We made up our mind that our wards at Compassionate Orphanage should learn from the book at their younger age so as not to bring up more unhappy adults. We thus purchased and donated the books
“When Fishes Climb Trees” is indeed a must-read for every parent and intending parents. The book advised parents to allow their children to walk the path they choose to walk on because forcing children to study what they don’t want leaves them dejected.
Albert Einstein sums it off thus “Everyone is a genius but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid”.
Whatever needs to be done needs to be done right away. Children are in a better position to change and adapt good values so they become kids with values.
We are glad that not only did our wards benefit from the experience, even the adults present at the event also gained a lot on how to properly guide the paths of their children towards things they are really passionate about.
At Sponsor a Child through School (S.A.C.T.S), our drive is to transform lives one day at a time so that together we can build orphaned and less privileged children for a better society. When society is good, it’s good for everyone!
You can also join us to give these children a better chance at life through Sponsorship, Mentoring sessions, Vocational training, CSR projects, and lots more.
