In December 2020, SACTS held its yearly Christmas Drive Campaign. We reached out to tender heart school/Orphanage. The School is located in Ebute Meta within the Railway compound and caters for over 50 vulnerable and less privileged children. The children that attend the school are from Makoko, and within and around Railway compound… Some of these children live under masts and abandoned infrastructure within the compound.
Our team member joined the proprietor to go pick up the children from their homes. The proprietor refers to these children as the poorest of the poor because most of these children’s parents cannot afford a decent place to stay, food to eat, let alone money to send their children to school.
Our team member Joyce, was horrified to see the places where these children live with their parents and was heartbroken to see young children exposed to so much hardship. One family with 4 children lived under the Network mast… on a normal day, staying close to this place is very bad for health, let alone living under it, another family lived on top of a swamp with over 7 children, father married 2 wives inside that house and the place was constructed with sticks and planks…
The most important take home for us was the fact the children from these environment value education and are appreciative of the work being done by the orphanage to give them an education.
There is a determination that you see when these children share their stories and we know that if given an opportunity they would want to make the world a better place for others.
