SACTS launched her BOOK CLUB to cater to the underserved children to commemorate World Book and Copyright Day.
The event was held on 24th April, 2021. We held an online session which hosted children from 4 different orphanages in Lagos State. We had a guest speaker from GTBank Volunteer team, Olajumoke Olaiya who engaged with our children and walked them through the benefits of reading and how it can help boost their confidence and vocabulary. She also advised of the long term impact of reading consistently as it makes them better contributors to their community. It was an overall successful event.
We kicked off the physical event at one of our Partner shelters, Out of School Children Empowerment Foundation (OSCEF) located at Ladipo, Oshodi Lagos State. We had over 40 children in attendance. The Book Club Initiative arose from our interaction with the underserved children during our Read-A-Book challenge which was held in February this year. The campaign was extended to children at the Tender Heart Orphanage and Vulnerable Children School (THOVCH) at Ebutte Meta Lagos State, and we discovered that though the children were interested in reading, most of them did
not know how to read. Some were also too frightened to even try and this gave birth to the idea to bring the reading culture to the children through a Book Club!!
The aim of the book club is to help build creative thinking, help them read and enjoy it, and also improve their social and communication skills. Our plan is to extend our Book Club to all our Partner orphanages and disadvantaged schools within Lagos State within the next 2 years.
