The Standard of education in Nigeria is reducing by the day. According to Statistica, Education in Nigeria is compulsory between the ages of 6 to 15. Early education is not mandatory and the participation rates in crèches, nurseries, or kindergarten are below 40%.
STATISTICS OF EDUCATION IN NIGERIA (2018)
In 2018, 7.2 million children in Nigeria were attending early education programs. The official age of primary education is 6. In 2018, Nigeria counted about 22.4 million children enrolled in public elementary schools and 5.5 million in private schools. Recent data shows that the first enrollment rate in primary schools in Nigeria is at 68.3% and the North-Western States registered the highest figures. The official age for junior secondary school education is 12 – 14. 6.8 million students were enrolled in both private and public lower education institutions.
With the standard of education and all these numbers going in and out of school, now is the time to pay attention to the quality of education. Now more-than-ever, parents and guardians are most concerned about their children from the time they’re old enough to start school until they are independent enough to make their own decisions. Parents and guardians would go to any length to ensure that their kids get a good education.
WHAT WE NEED TODAY
In recent times, life has gotten so complicated. It is no longer news that the next generation will grow up to be radically different from anything we have experienced in the past-a world filled with artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, automation, virtual reality, self-driving cars, and other cool stuff.
It brings us to the question, what is school? What role does school play in how we are educating our children? School used to be the storehouse of human knowledge and going to school was the best way to learn anything . . . but in recent times, this is no longer the case…
The role of school should no longer be to fill the heads of our children with information. School should be a place that inspires students to be curious about the world they live in. Kids are born explorers such that when they’re young all they want to do is push boundaries, explore the limits of what they can do. Let us create an environment that does not stifle that curiosity and creativity. Hence, the ability to adapt and learn something new should be valued above everything else.
In the world today, we have moved past studying for a particular profession and sticking to it for the rest of our lives. Now, one has the capacity to learn as many skills as possible and evolve as many times as possible, thanks to the internet!. You are missing out on a lot of knowledge if the last time you learned anything new was in secondary school or university. This is not something that we have to worry about for just our younger generation, even as adults. Therefore, the process of learning, re-learning, and unlearning is required to survive in the world that would exist in the future.
At SACTS, we are focused on providing quality education for the less privileged/disadvantaged children in Nigeria. Currently, we have over 100 children under our sponsorship across orphanages and & schools in Nigeria. So, join us today to transform lives for a better society.
